What is an EAN-13 barcode?

EAN-13 is the 13-digit retail barcode used on products worldwide, outside the US and Canada where UPC-A is common. The digits identify the company and product, and the last digit is a check digit that lets scanners detect reading errors.

Enter the first 12 digits and Zonlet adds the correct 13th check digit. If you enter all 13 digits, Zonlet confirms the check digit is right and tells you the expected value if it isn't, so you don't print a barcode that won't scan.

Where to get an EAN-13 number

To sell in most retail stores and marketplaces, you need product numbers registered to your company by GS1, the global barcode standards body. Once you have your GS1 numbers, Zonlet turns them into barcode images for packaging and labels.

How to create an EAN-13 barcode

  1. Enter your number. Type the 12-digit product number; the check digit is added automatically.
  2. Add a caption. Optionally add the product name above or below the bars.
  3. Choose size and color. Set bar height and colors. Black bars on white scan best.
  4. Download. Export SVG for packaging artwork, PNG for labels, or PDF to print.

What is the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?

UPC-A has 12 digits and is used mainly in the US and Canada. EAN-13 has 13 digits and is used worldwide. Modern scanners read both.
